A cappella in Zürich

Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 17:00
SWR Vokalensemble, SWR Experimentalstudio, Maurice Oeser · Elena Ralli (Sound Director), Yuval Weinberg (Conductor)
Inspired by György Ligeti's microtonality, Lithuanian composer Justė Janulytė's "Iridescence" features vibrant soundscapes and ever-changing harmonies. The spiraling sound, evoking infinity and eternal light, connects with the ancient text in Helmut Lachenmann's "Consolation." Josef Gabriel Rheinberger's "Cantus missae" shares this theme of eternal faith, showcasing the Liechtenstein composer's emphatic style.

My Melodies

Fri, Feb 14, 2025, 20:00
Hornisten des hr-Sinfonieorchesters, Alexander Waite (Piano), Matthias Hermann (Conductor)
Helmut Lachenmann's music for eight horns seeks new ways of listening, not new sounds. Christian Mason's composition sees the orchestra as a giant resonating instrument. In between, Lachenmann's first major piano work. Lachenmann's "My Melodies" goes beyond the classical soloist and any notion of melody. He aims to make perception tangible through unconventional use of familiar instruments and tones. The hr-Sinfonieorchester, along with two Lachenmann experts, perform this extraordinary concert.

Sir Simon Rattle

Sat, Mar 22, 2025, 20:00
Sir Simon Rattle (Conductor), Stefan Tischler (Tuba), Norbert Ommer (Sound design), Bavarian Radio Chorus, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Boulez, Berio, and Lachenmann: all three are celebrating anniversaries in 2025, and all three have contributed landmark works to modern music. Three of these exceptional works will be presented by Sir Simon Rattle, the Bavarian Radio Chorus, and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in this concert. First on the program will be Cummings ist der Dichter – a work in which Boulez convincingly accentuates the phonetic and semantic dimension of the words in an extremely refined and breathtakingly colorful manner. Laborintus II combines the anarchic charm of the 1960s with a quasi-baroque opulence. In his tuba concerto Harmonica, Helmut Lachenmann explores the sonic boundaries between eruption and silence. Stefan Tischler, principal tuba of the BRSO, will be the soloist.
